[as defined at wikipedia] "is a variety of cuisine originating in the Southeastern United States, and from Native American culture. It is common in areas with a history of slave-based plantations and has maintained popularity among the Black American and American Deep-South communities for centuries. The expression "soul food" may have originated in the mid-1960s, when "soul" was a common word used to describe Black American culture."
As for yours truly, my definition, is good ol' home cookin' with recipes [some of which have been shared in earlier posts---southern fried chicken, chitlins, collard greens etc] and traditions passed down for generations. If you have not had the good fortune of having a familial source of soul food recipes or want to add a published soul food cookbook to your library i highly recommend Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine by Norma Jean and Carole Darden. | | my beloved paperback copy that i've had for decades has been used to the point that it is being held together with tape & paperclips. The basic cookie recipe [which is perfect for adding raisins, walnuts, chocolate chips, or whatever you like to make it your own] was an often requested---dare i say demanded one from my brother. The only thing that got me to stop making them for him was when he developed diabetes and could no longer indulge his sweet tooth. he has passed on but whenever i make them i think of him & try to do him proud. |
